12.11. Guggulan Gulgula

At early Monday morning we headed towards Golan Heigths. Our first stop was Gamla nature reserve. Gates were closed till 9.00am and we had few hours to scan the heights before that.

A small Redstart-flock was one of the most interesting observations. There was nominate adult Black Redstart, few female-type BRs's and a female Ehrnberg's Redstart (samamisicus). We (at least I :) were surprised how distinct the wing panel of female Ehrnberg's was.
Other nice birds were Zitting Cisticola, few Calandra Larks, several Syrian Woodpeckers and Griffon Vultures.

At 9.00am when the gate finally opened... our car didn't started, the battery was empty :) There wasn't any people at sight so our only change was to walk in Gamla Reserve and ask for help. We enjoyed a nice two km's walk with two pairs of Finch's Wheatears (above) and a flock of Rock Sparrows. Staff in the reserve were really helpful and soon we got our Rover running again.

While in reserve we went to watch the gorge and it's raptors. The lady in the reception have told us there have been a "big black vulture" yesterday. Jände was fairly exited as he needed Black Vulture for his Israeli list which is the longest amongst Finnish birders. Some Chukars and surprisingly two Bramblings as well as a pair of Blue Rock Thrushes were entertaining us and soon the raptors started to raise from the cliffs.

After a half an hour or so Frans noticed a beautiful Black (Cinereous) Vulture with few Griffons. Splendid!

Jände and after tick smile :)
We managed to see some more Griffons and an adult Bonelli's Eagle before continuing forward to Golan heights.

Some heavy bombing was going on in the Syrian border but we didn't let it disturb our birding. We checked some lakes and saw a nice flock of some 30 Black-necked Grebes. While walking to some lake we flushed an Oriental Skylark which was giving it's distinct call constantly.

Aamuvarhain matkattiin raamatullisiin maisemiin Golanin Gugguloille, liki Genesaretin järveä.
Munkkikaffeet juotiin toki.

Kukkulakierrosta jatkettiin helikopterien pörrätessä ja tykinpaukkeessa (sotaharjotukset). Jonkun järven likeltä lähti suriseva aasiankiuru - päivän viides eldeka :) Redupointseja eli Reiskoja lorotti tasaisesti, vihervarpusesta pronssi-iibikseen ja rusotaskusta varpushaukkaan. Timo määritti antilooppeja ja jonkun männyn, mut nuijas notkean rotan! Gomia oli!
Illalla ehittiin vielä Hulan opparille, missä hienoimpana 20 sinisuohaukkaa iltalennolla, melkeen yhessä parvessa.

We spent the rest of the day checking various kibbuzes, lakes and pools and visited "old Hula" briefly just before the sunset.
Some day counts; Shoveler 500, White Pelican 400, Griffon Vulture 55, Hen Harrier 35, Kestrel 60, Merlin 3, Corn Bunting 1100. 101 species today (107 yesterday) and 133 in all.

Retkenpinnat 133, tänää 101 ja eilen 107. Huomen sit onomatopoeettisiin biotyyppehin Hermon vuorelle, eli Hermannille. Kovaa lorotusta luvassa, jos sendari suo.
