We left to Säppi B.O. for traditional late autumn birding on Thursday 25th October. This time our group consisted as many as 16 keen and mostly yound birders, so there wasn't going to be any room for skulkers :)
On Thursday we had only the afternoon for birding and the most notable observations were six Pine Grosbeaks, a single Jack Snipe, seven Chiffchaffs (both "huit" and "sweeo" callers but not tristises) and 1cy Baltic Gull. Friday was much better; Kim Kuntze and Meri Öhman found a splendid Pied Wheater from the southernmost tip of the island!
I managed to get only some record shots in bad weather; 15 m/s NW plus quite a heavy snowfall. However, the most important ID-criteria are visible; pale feather tips to mantle and crown feathers, consistent breast band and black underwingcoverts.
Petri Kuhnon otoksia samasta linnusta tarsigerissa.
Petri Kuhno did better with photos, see the link above.
Ariel Ahlblad and Pied Wheaters black underwing coverts.
The whole team connected with this second individual for the Säppi B.O.
We had quite nice after-tick-parties till late night but still some of us managed to get up for seawatching next morning...
